The newer developments off Downton Lane and towards New Milton are mostly 1970s onwards, many with no usable chimney. These get twin-wall flue systems - internally through a first-floor room or externally up an outside wall. For the seafront properties, we use 316-grade marine stainless as a minimum to resist the salt corrosion that attacks standard flue components within a few years on this stretch of coast.

Seafront Downdraught on the Esplanade

Properties along the Esplanade and Hurst Road face the open Solent with no windbreak. When south-westerlies blow - which is most of the winter - standard flues can experience severe downdraught, pushing smoke back into the room. We fit rotating cowl terminals that turn to face the wind, or fixed anti-downdraught cowls with internal baffles. We also increase flue termination height where the roofline is exposed, giving the smoke enough upward momentum to clear the turbulence zone above the roof.

Marine-Grade Stainless for Salt Air

The salt-laden air along the Milford on Sea seafront accelerates corrosion of standard flue components. We use 316-grade stainless steel liners as a minimum on all coastal installations, with 904-grade available for maximum longevity. Weather caps, cowl terminals, and external flue sections all get the marine-grade treatment. This isn't optional on the seafront - standard 304-grade components can show pitting corrosion within three to five years in this exposure category.

Victorian Villas Around the Green

The Victorian and Edwardian villas around Milford Green and along West Street have substantial brick chimneys that are well-suited to flexible liners. Many were built for coal fires with oversized flues, so a liner matched to the stove's diameter improves draw and efficiency. We survey each chimney from the roof to check the stack condition - some have had lead flashing replaced or repointing over the years, and we need to confirm the structure is sound before fitting a liner.

Chimneyless New Builds off Downton Lane

The 1970s and later houses off Downton Lane and towards New Milton typically have no usable chimney. We install twin-wall insulated flue systems that can run internally through a first-floor room - where the flue becomes a design feature in brushed stainless - or externally up an outside wall in dark powder-coated finish to blend with brickwork. Either way, it's a day's work to fit, and the stove draws as well as it would in a property with a traditional chimney.
