    Artisan Stone & Timber Work

    Tailored Fireplace Environments

A standard 'off-the-shelf' hearth rarely fits a period Lymington fireplace perfectly. We specialise in made-to-measure stonework, cutting slate, granite, and limestone to the exact millimetre of your opening. Whether you prefer the sleek, uniform look of honed Italian slate or the rugged, natural texture of riven Brazilian stone, we fabricate each piece in our workshop to ensure a seamless fit that meets all safety clearances for combustible floor protection.

Our oak beams are a New Forest staple. We source reclaimed air-dried oak, which has already done its 'moving' and cracking, meaning it won't warp once installed above a hot stove. We finish these by hand - options range from light sanding with clear wax for a modern look, to heavy distressing and dark oils for a traditional 'aged' cottage aesthetic. Safety is paramount: we ensure every beam is installed with the required distance to combustibles as specified by the stove manufacturer.

The result is a fireplace that looks like it has always been part of your home's architecture, rather than an afterthought.

    Questions Customers Ask

    Straight Answers About This Service

Can you make a hearth to fit my specific fireplace opening?

Yes. Every hearth we supply is cut to the exact dimensions of your chimney breast or freestanding stove position. T-shaped hearths for inset installations and rectangular or teardrop slabs for freestanding stoves are all fabricated in our Lymington workshop.

Is an oak beam safe above a hot stove?

It is, provided it's installed at the manufacturer's specified distance from the stove flue collar. We calculate these clearances during the survey. If your space is too tight for a real oak beam, we can supply a non-combustible oak-effect alternative that looks identical.

What hearth thickness do Building Regulations require?

The minimum is 12mm of non-combustible material, but for durability and a premium look we typically fabricate hearths at 20mm or 30mm. We'll confirm the right thickness for your stove and floor construction during the design stage.

Do you supply the stone or do I need to source my own?

We supply everything. You choose from our range of riven and honed slates, granites, and limestones, and we handle the cutting, finishing, and installation. This ensures the hearth meets all safety clearances and fits perfectly.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Common Questions

Honed slate has been ground flat and smooth, giving a modern, matte finish that is easy to wipe clean. Riven slate retains its natural 'split' surface, offering more texture and a rustic look. Both are equally durable for fireplace use.

No, because we install it according to the manufacturer's 'distance to combustible' specifications. This usually requires a specific gap between the stove and the wood. If your space is tight, we can offer non-combustible 'oak-effect' beams that look identical but can be placed much closer to the heat.

Building regulations specify that a hearth must be at least 12mm thick if the stove does not heat the floor to over 100°C. However, for a high-end look and structural stability, we typically use 20mm or 30mm stone slabs.

A T-shape hearth is used when the stove sits inside a chimney opening - the 'leg' of the T goes into the chamber, and the 'head' sits out on the floor. If your stove is freestanding against a flat wall, a simple rectangle or teardrop shape usually works best.

Reclaimed oak is very low maintenance. A light buff with a little wax every year or two will keep the wood nourished. Because it's a natural product, it may develop small 'shakes' (cracks) over time as it adjusts to the heat - this is normal and adds to the character.
